(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester Police Department responded to the scene of a shooting at Park Towers, at 22 Broadway Avenue North in Rochester around 11 a.m. Friday morning.
“I came downstairs to have a cigarette, and I smelt something. It smelt like a lighter at first, but I know what a gun smells like when it goes off,” said resident Hector Cuevas.
According to a department spokesperson, a female had been shot and a suspect is in custody. Police say there is no known immediate threat to the public, and the victim suffered non-life threatening injuries.
According to the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center’s jail roster, Robin Helmueller, 51, was booked on Friday and now faces recommended charges of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and reckless discharge of a firearm – endangering safety. Both charges are felonies.
Some residents told ABC 6 News crews at the scene that they know the victim, and are shocked by the incident.
“She is an awesome lady, one of the best people you will ever meet,” said resident Karen Raisley.
One witness said he was outside when he heard screaming. Once back inside the building, he witnessed multiple people holding a man on the ground in an apparent effort to restrain him.
