Austin nursing home resident sews dolls for a special cause

(ABC 6 News) – It may only be August, but some people are already planning ahead for the holidays. One woman in an Austin nursing home is already hard at work getting ready to give back this year.
“There’s too many children out there who don’t get anything for Christmas,” said Bobbie Carra, a 78-year-old resident at Good Samaritan Society – Comforcare in Austin.
“You know, people, low-income families, people living in shelters, and this is an especially hard time for them.”
Carra can usually be seen with a needle and thread and is making dolls all to help benefit Toys for Tots.
“I figure if I can make two a week, I can have 40 by Thanksgiving. I’ve been making three a week, so I’m ahead of time.”

The dolls are being sold for $20 each and the money will be used to buy toys, for Toys for Tots. Others are jumping in to help Carra reach her goal.
“Staff started bringing her in materials, or pajama pants to make things from,” said Clara Stitt, the administrator at Good Samaritan Society – Comforcare in Austin.
“So now, a lot of the staff are invested in it too.”
The cause is near and dear to Carra’s heart. She and her late husband used to donate to the charity every year.
“Makes me feel good. Makes me feel like I’m doing something for someone,” added Carra
Stitt said about Bobbie and her dolls: “It’s inspirational. We all could be a little bit more like Bobbie.”
Bobbie recently won first place for her dolls at the Mower County Fair.
