Fire burns through facility in Clarks Grove Sunday morning; several buildings total loss
(ABC 6 News) – A massive fire has been spotted in Clarks Grove near Albert Lea early Sunday morning, with fire crews saying first responders spent nearly seven hours battling the blaze.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s dispatch received a call around 4:10 a.m. about a fire at the intersection of 255th St. and 755th Ave. The fire brought them to Green Group Processing, formerly known as I-90 Reprocessing, according to Freeborn County Sheriff officials.
The fire is believed to have started before 4 a.m.
Once on-scene, first responders say they witnessed the north and east building on the property fully engulfed in flames. The roof on the east building collapsed as a result of the fire.
The north and east buildings on the property are a complete loss, according to the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
The other building, deemed the south building, suffered minimal damage.
Around a dozen fire departments across the county responded to the scene. These include fire departments from Ellendale, Albert Lea, Hayward, Hollandale, Glenville, Emmons, Hartland, Alden and others.
“The road looked like it had 25 to 30 fire trucks out here,” witness David Johnson said.
Thousands of gallons of water were used to help extinguish the fire. Crews had to use water from numerous businesses like Kwik Trip and Hyvee.
The fire was put out just after 11 a.m., after nearly seven hours of work from first responders.
“All you could see was two big fire trucks still spraying water onto the fire or what was left of the fire out here,” Johnson said.
Tim Bennett with the Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office says it took ‘thousands and thousands of gallons of water to put the fire out’.
With the extensive amount of water used, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal has been contacted, but the investigation may be impacted due to fears of remaining water freezing over the property overnight.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has also been contacted to ensure the runoff pollution will not harm the environment. There are also materials inside the facility that were burned that may need to be investigated further.
Damage estimates are unknown and no injuries have been reported according to the press release sent out by Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office.
Any foul play in the fire is still unknown at this time and no evidence has been found so far according to Freeborn County Sheriff officials.
According to Bennett, however, one car was witnessed near the scene speeding away from the building around 3:30 a.m.
The Freeborn County Sheriff’s Office says the owner of the building, David Nix, lives in Iowa and was unable to be reached at the time of the fire.
Deputies spoke with one resident who lives nearby to the Green Group processing property, who shared with them he had heard loud bangs just before 4 a.m., and witness the flames in the distance.
