(ABC 6 News) – About 3 inches of snow fell in Mason City Monday night into Tuesday morning. The plows have been out, and road conditions are better but many are still worried about the wind.

A big focus of today’s cleanup, the Mason City Municipal Airport.

“Snow, we are equipped for snow, we can handle. But ice, the blowing snow and high winds cause a lot more trouble for us. We have a lot less options on how we can clear the runways,” said airport manager David Sims.

Although it’s been a while since the last winter storm, the airport’s four-man team worked tirelessly to get these runways cleared in time for this morning’s first take-off.

“The very first snow of the season is probably the most difficult because we got to get back in the swing of things, get the rust and remember how to do our jobs as well as we can. But once we get further into the season it gets a lot easier,” said Sims.

While trips in the air took off smoothly after the snow, road conditions still proved tricky in some spots.

“I know earlier we had an empty semi jack-knifed because of the wind gusts so that always creates problems, and of course with the blowing a drifting snow you know it’s going to be dark here in a couple of hours, so it’s going to reduce even more visibility,” said Iowa State Trooper Tom Williams.

Statewide there were 100 crashes between Monday night and 11 a.m. Tuesday morning. 15 people were hurt, but thankfully, there were no fatalities.

If you find yourself in a crash always call 911.

“If they’re in the ditch somebody else is in the ditch too especial when the roads are back it’s going to take us awhile to get their too,” said Williams.

Most business opened right on time this morning like the Boulevard Bar and Grill. But that doesn’t mean the drive was a breeze.

“Windy in Iowa is every day, but we had our own moments of slippery sliding kind of moments,” said co-owner Gentian Bajrami.

In spite of the dicey weather, this business remained open.

“As business owners we do have to consistent in running a business. We have the hotel next door; we are right by I-35 there might be people who want to get fed so we are here to do our part of our job,” said Bajrami.

It’s the upper Midwest; more snow is inevitable as we continue through the winter months.

Officials say if you’re traveling during the winter, make sure you have a phone charger, water, plenty of gas, taking along extra clothes to stay warm and as always if you’re driving slow down and take your time.
