Residents in Clear Lake home woke up to find a fire in the basement Saturday morning
(ABC 6 News) – A Clear Lake home sustained smoke damage on Saturday after an early morning fire woke up its residents, according to the fire department.
Chief Doug Meyers with the Clear Lake Fire Dept. says fire crews responded to a reported structure fire at 516 South 12th Street at 6:32 a.m.
Once on-scene, firefighters located a fire in the basement of the home. The firefighters then executed an “aggressive interior attack”, quickly extinguishing the blaze and keeping it contained to the basement.
According to Chief Meyers, the first floor of the home sustained smoke damage.
The occupants of the home were home at the time of the fire and were awakened by the smell of smoke, leading them to call 911.
The home is owned by Jacob and Catherine Vorland, according to Meyers.
Around 19 firefighters responded to the fire, using one ladder company, a rescue company, a command vehicle and two medic units.
The Clear Lake Police Dept. also assisted at the scene.
There were not smoke detectors inside the home and the house was not insured, according to Chief Meyers.
All of the families’ pets were safely evacuated and there were no injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
