(ABC 6 News) – The winter months sometimes make it harder to get out of the house. But the Mason City Arena’s open skate is making it easier for people of all ages to get out and skate their way to new friendships.

Macey Overbeck is a 4th grader at Hoover Elementary in Mason City. She’s still new to ice skating focusing, in on keeping her balance.

“I’m trying to keep on tracking and not fall down,” Overbeck said.

Fortunately she has her cousin, Nova Boerner, who’s an experienced skater and recently moved to Mason City, to help her out.

“I’m just helping my cousin ice skate, doing really well. I think she’s going to be a pro at it. I just enjoy hanging out, rolling around, doing my thing,” said Boerner.

And they’re not alone in getting on the open ice.

“A lot of people come 60 to 100. It’s something you can do when it’s cold out instead of sledding or hanging out in the house,” said Jenna Whitte, an employee at Mason City Arena.

Many others are avoiding those frigid temps and taking advantage of Mason City Arena’s open skate

Twice a week those of all ages are taking the time to enjoy the beauty of winter, making friendships along the way.

“It’s a great way to get out with your friends and family during the winter you obviously don’t want to be outside doing anything so it’s a great form of exercise and a great way to get out here and be in the community,” said Marisa Barragan, another employee at Mason City Arena.

Those friendships run even deeper for the staff inside.

“We’re here like all day long and we’ve become like best friends,” Whitte said.

“Especially on the weekends we’re here a lot, that’s when most activities are happening so it’s great to be out here,” said Barragan.

Whether you’re a professional or just working to keep two feet on the ice the Mason City Arena is a great place to embrace that winter chill.

With more public skates on the calendar, Macey and Nova hope to keep making new friends here before spring’s thaw.
