Wintry weather to bring snow and colder temperatures

It has been anything but a true winter across southeast Minnesota and northern Iowa this season, but a taste of wintry weather is on the way later this week.

Mild temperatures will continue on Tuesday with highs in the mid-to-upper 30s with a bump into the low-to-mid 40s on Wednesday.

A potent clipper system will track through the area on Wednesday night. Initially, temperatures will be warm enough for rain, however as temperatures cool, the rain will eventually change to snow overnight before ending early Thursday morning.

Snow accumulations of 1-3″ look likely across much of southeast Minnesota. It is certainly possible a stronger band sets up with amounts pushing 4″ especially near the I-90 corridor. Amounts of one inch or less are possible in northern Iowa. However, there is still some uncertainty on the storm track and how long the rain will hang on before a changeover to snow especially in northern Iowa.

Colder air will filter in with high temperatures near 30° on Thursday and 20s on Friday.

Another system will bring the chance for snow on Friday, however several details remain on the track of that system.
