Kasson-Mantorville falls to Hutchinson in championship game 42-14

(ABC 6 News) – The Kasson-Mantorville Komets state championship run was brought to a halt at the hands of the Hutchinson Tigers, falling 42-14 in the Class 4A state championship game.

Kasson-Mantorville Komets took on the one-loss Tigers on Friday at U.S. Bank Stadium in the state football championships.

Tigers pounded the ball on the ground early, junior Alex Elliot used his speed to find the edge and go 40 yards for the touchdown, Tigers led 6-0.

Komets had no answer for Alex Elliot on the ground in the first quarter, he posted a 40-yard gain putting the Tigers in the red zone as the quarter came to an end. Andrew Ladwig punched it from 2 yards out making it 14-0 Tigers.

Komets immediately responded with a 72-yard kick return from senior Brooks Buchanan putting the Komets in a scoring position.

The momentum dropped out after that play as Quarterback Matthew Donovan fumbled on first down and loses it.

Second play after the fumble, Tigers, Mitchell Piehl rushes 90 yards adding six more for Hutchinson, 20-0.

Senior Matthew Donovan found redemption after the fumble, found a hole in the defense, and rushed for 30 yards to make it a 7-20 game.

With under a minute to play in the first half, Tigers Alex Elliot gets his second touchdown of the game off a pitch from 12 yards out, 28-7.

Tigers kept their foot on the gas in the 2nd quarter, Hutchinsons opening drive was capped off by a 2 yard run by Andrew Ladwig, 36-7.

Komets Anthony Moe-tucker helped cut the lead to 22 points, with a rush up the middle from 14 yards out, 36-14.

With the Class 2A title in its sights, Hutchinson worked the clocked before Colin Nagel finished a 15 play drive in the end zone from 2 yards out, 42-12.

Tigers had 423 yards on the ground, Alex Elliot finished with 125 yards and 2 touchdowns, teammate Mitchell Piehl notched 128 yards and 1 touchdown.

For the Komets, Matthew Donovan led the way with 101 yards rushing and 27 yards through the air, and 1 touchdown. Anthony Moe-tucker also had 85 yards and 1 touchdown on the ground.
