Temperature changes could impact your health
(ABC 6 News) – Wednesday was a great day to stay inside, but Friday had many families visiting the park to enjoy the sunshine, like Alberto Vera and his kids.
“It’s definitely wild. And in Minnesota you just learn to live with the wild swings, sometimes. I mean, [the weather] went from 70s to a low of, what was it, 8? I don’t know what to think there,” said Vera.
But the inconsistent weather can stress out the body, putting it at risk for illness.
“You know, I find so many of those at the turn of the season or right now. People are coming in with a lot of upper respiratory issues, such as runny nose, postnasal drip, getting a sinus headache, having a cough, and some people having shortness of breath, chills, fevers,” said Dr. Tejal Shelat with Mayo Clinic.
Shelat says you need to get ahead of it to protect your immune system.
“The easiest way is to have a good source of Vitamin-C. So, fruits that are rich in Vitamin-C, like lemons and oranges. Just having one a day or squeezing few slices of lemon into your water bottle, that might go a very long way into protecting your immune system,” said Shelat.
But if you do get sick, Vera says he likes to keep it simple.
“If the weather is nice, it’s gotta be fresh air, fresh air and sunlight, but you know if it’s the middle of winter, it’s staying home, it’s chicken soup, it’s pretty basic stuff,” said Vera.
