(ABC 6 News) – At the Minnesota capitol, lawmakers are taking up a bill that could impact hospitals and healthcare facilities.

A proposal heard in a House committee on Thursday would require health systems to notify the state health commissioner 300 days before a hospital is closed or when services will relocate.

“The language in this bill empowers local governments to shape the future of health care within their communities,” said Cassie Heide, the Fosston City Administrator. “Local governments have an intimate understanding of community needs that far surpasses those of corporate executives whose profit often exceeds the general fund budgets of the communities they serve.”

The bill being considered would also give local communities the right of first refusal on the sale of a medical facility.
