Governor Walz and Members of Minnesota Trade Delegation Visit Mayo Healthcare in London
(ABC 6 News) – Governor Tim Walz and members of a Minnesota trade delegation to the United Kingdom and Finland visited Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London. Mayo Clinic, based in Rochester, Minnesota, opened the central London location last year to provide convenient local and regional access to its world-renowned medical care.
Mayo Clinic is a cornerstone of Minnesota’s global reputation as a pioneer in health care excellence and medical breakthroughs. Minnesota’s renown in the field makes the state a destination for those seeking state-of-the-art health care, as well as for researchers, entrepreneurs, and companies in the medical device, biotechnology, and pharmaceutical industries.
“As Minnesota’s 8th largest export market, the U.K. is a critically important global trading partner. The U.K. is one of the most innovative countries in the world. It has a robust medical technology sector and is committed to sustainability — qualities that Minnesota shares,” said Governor Walz. “I was honored to visit Mayo Clinic Healthcare in London to learn about how this Minnesota-based organization is advancing health care both in Minnesota and abroad.”
Medical devices and pharmaceuticals are among Minnesota’s top four exports to the U.K. In 2020, Minnesota companies exported $499 million in products to the U.K., with medical devices accounting for $110 million, and pharmaceuticals accounting for $43 million.
More than 33,000 Minnesotans work in medical device manufacturing alone. Innovative researchers, medical providers, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers in Minnesota have developed an astonishing number of breakthrough medical technologies and treatments. Additionally, Minnesota ranks among the top states in medical device patents per 1 million people.
Minnesota exports of all goods supported roughly 119,000 jobs in manufacturing and other industries in the state in 2019. Growing existing export markets and making inroads into new markets for Minnesota-made products will help strengthen and diversify Minnesota’s economy.
Governor Walz is leading the State of Minnesota’s week-long trade mission to the U.K. and Finland from November 13-19, with stops in the major business centers of London and Helsinki. The mission is focused on increasing state exports, promoting Minnesota as a premier destination for bus
