Albert Lea celebrates Mexican Independence Day

(ABC 6 News) – September 16th is Mexican Independence Day – the city of Albert Lea hosts its first-ever Mexican independence day celebration at Central park.

Friday marks 212 years since Mexico declared its Independence from Spain.

But why Albert Lea – organizers say the event is important to the community.

According to data provided by organizers around 15 percent of the population in Albert Lea is of Mexican descent. So the city sees this as a way to make people of Mexican descent more appreciated and a part of the community.

“Let’s get behind our Mexican population and celebrate with them. This is a really big deal to them, and we’re a part of their community and they’re a part of our community. So, let’s have a good party together. Let’s get behind our Mexican population and celebrate with them. It’s being put on by Albert Lea Main Street Program, Albert Lea Parks and Rec, Albert Lea Select Foods, and the Albert Lea Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Several food vendors served up various Mexican cuisine throughout the day. 

The event is being held at Central Park from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
