(ABC 6 News) – Saturday morning in downtown Rochester, families and children had the opportunity to get up close and personal with one of the Med City’s current construction projects, the Discovery Walk.
Construction for the Discovery Walk began this spring. It is a linear parkway designed to connect the infamous Soldier’s Field to the heart of downtown. Those involved in the building process say it will be more than just a sidewalk, with the goal to give people an accessible place to sit, eat and relax.
Saturday morning, the community gathered to play in the dirt and meet construction workers on the project, even sitting in the construction machines.
The event was put on by Knutson Construction, Rochester Mom and Destination Medical Center.
“It was just kind of brainstorming to see what we could do with the space to generate excitement about the space and to let people know exactly what we have going on down here,” said Geno Palazzari, the communications manager at Destination Medical Center.
Many people spent their day at the event.
“The turnout here is absolutely phenomenal and amazing. We’re very thrilled to have everyone come down here and learn about the event and learn about the project itself, but it’s also another reason to come downtown and check things out,” Palazzari added.
Phase one of construction for the Discovery Walk is expected to be completed this fall. The second and final phase of the project is expected to be finished fall of 2023.
