Homeowners speak out about Rochester’s proposed property tax levy increase
(ABC 6 News) – The city of Rochester is set to increase the property tax by 10.35% leading a lot of residents to begin sounding off on the change as they shared their concerns.
“Don’t mind paying the taxes as long as the service is matched, but right now, there’s been a lot of people wondering if we’re really getting what we pay for in this neighborhood,” said Benjamin Zastrow, a homeowner in the Lowertown neighborhood in Rochester.
He says the city needs to re-focus on the basics, rather than spending too much time and money on other construction projects.
“If we’re not handling public safety and utilities first, it’s hard to justify golf courses and parks on the other side of town.”
One local real estate agent, however, saying he doesn’t expect the housing market to be impacted too heavily.
“With it being one of, as I said before, a whole host of things that are going to be playing into the market, I truly feel with Rochester being on the market, nationally, not internationally, we’re going to continue to stay steady with our housing prices, and strong in the housing market,” said Karl Rogers, a realtor at Southeastern Minnesota Realtors.
The tax levy is expected to be approved Monday, Sept. 9.
