$10,000 grant boosts new reading program

(ABC 6 News) – The Reading Center/ Dyslexia Institute of MN is partnering with the Jeremiah Program to help more kids to learn how to read.

Thanks to a generous $10,000 grant from The Rotary Club of Rochester Community Foundation, the Jeremiah Program will now have resources from the Reading Center to teach kids how to read.

This October, TRC will begin to provide two weekly small group Reading Clubs at JP to
early elementary children & their mothers that will give emerging readers the skills
needed for success.

Mothers will also learn how to help support their child on their challenging but rewarding journey to successful reading. All services will be provided at no cost to students and their families on-site at the JP residential campus.

Additionally, JP will offer childcare and accompanying meal to participants to ease the barriers to
participation

Dyslexia is a common condition that affects as many as 1 in 5 people across the country. The condition directly interferes with an individual’s ability to learn the pivotal task of reading and negatively impacts their self-perception and ability to thrive in school, work, and relationships.

TRC will work with JP staff to identify and screen struggling emerging readers 5-7 years old.

“So if we can help those families to teach those young students how to read, and how to go about learning to learn to read, then we have contributed to helping that family lifting themselves out of poverty,” The Reading Center Executive Director Cindy Russell said.

They hope to start the program in the next few weeks.
