Candidates for Byron school board take part in open house

(ABC 6 News) – Eleven candidates are vying for a total of six spots on the Byron School Board.

At Thursday evenings ‘Meet the School Board Candidates’ event, the candidates got to hear from parents about the issues they’re most concerned about as well as make their case on why they should get their vote.

There are four candidates running for three spots in the race for a 4-year term. All four candidates have kids in the district and said they want to build off the already great reputation Byron Public Schools has.

As that is one of the main reasons they moved to the city in the first place.

“We have amazing teachers and support staff here. How do we keep them involved and engaged with our students? Because that’s what’s made it successful, said current board member Jeremy Aagard. He is running for re-election.

“Being able to maintain that it’s super important. And the town is really growing so we need to make sure we sustain that. So that all the kids continue to benefit,” said candidate J. Luis Lujan.

“Being one of the biggest districts or the most popular districts around. One that other districts are trying to emulate. You know with getting students coming in and everything. We got to be doing something right, so lets keep and maintain that,” said candidate David Wernimont.

Of the four candidates in that race, Carrie Delaney was also at the event, but declined an interview.

Voters will also be choosing three candidates out of a pool of seven to fill the 2-year term seats.

Six of the seven candidates attended Thursdays event.
