RPS participates in National Walk to School Day

(ABC 6 News) – Kids in our area spent the morning walking to school Wednesday.
Some do it everyday, but today it’s being celebrated.
Rochester Public Schools ‘Safe Routes to School Walk’ is a part of National Walk to School Day.
The one mile walk took place from Homestead Park to Riverside Elementary.
You could hear the excitement from parents, teachers, and staff.
This is the 19th year Olmsted County Public Health has teamed up with Rochester Public Schools for the event.
This event means a lot to parents too.
It’s a chance for them to bond with their kids.
“It’s enjoyable, the weather’s not too bad. It’s nice and cool, it’s fun! I’ve never done this, I’ve walked to school when I was a kid, but never my kids,” Parent Faith Tucker said.
This is the 19th year Olmsted County Public Health has teamed up with Rochester Public Schools for the event.
“The purpose is to celebrate the journey that our kids make to and from school everyday and the way that our community works to do that safely that kids get there on time and ready to learn,” RPS Superintendent Kent Pekel said.
According to MNDOT, over 170 schools and thousands of students throughout the state of Minnesota took part in todays event.
