Arson investigation underway in Mason City

(ABC 6 NEWS) – The Mason City Police Department is investigating a fire believed to be arson that happened Wednesday night.

Around 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Mason City Fire Department and officers responded to a fire behind a building in the 600 block of 6th St. SW.

The police department found that a cutting torch had been used to cut a metal plate that was securing a door and police believe it was an attempt to commit a burglary.

Police said the torch caused a fire that led residents living above the vacant business to evacuate.

No one was hurt in the fire, but four residents were displaced and are unable to return to their apartments, according to police.

The Mason City Police Department said this is an active arson investigation and if anyone has any information they are asked to contact the police department.
