(ABC 6 NEWS) – The Minnesota Department of Public Safety honored black law enforcement leaders who have back to their state and made a difference in policing.

The former Saint Paul Police Chief, Bill Finney was just one of a handful of speakers.

He shared his experience and time with the police force and what young people can do if they have an interest in law enforcement.

"My belief was that the police department existed to serve all communities we serve and we police those people who are outside the law. I think it’s a great opportunity for a young person, especially a young minority person to get into law enforcement and bring their considerable skills and their energies to the profession and move it forward, into the 21st century," Finney said.

Other panelists underlined that it takes just one person to make a difference in someone’s life and that having a group of young people with a heart for service coming together, will go a long way for our future.
