(ABC 6 News) — Minnesota may be all wrapped up when it comes to prep sports, but there’s still the Hawkeye State.
Out in Mason City, the Newman Catholic Knights hosted the Newman Classic softball tournament on Saturday. Facing the Hudson Pirates, this game was a stalemate for the longest time. The Knights held fast in the fifth inning thanks to an easy 6-3 out from NC’s Leah Brown to Madi Elwood.
Bottom of the sixth, the Knights’ Emma Weiner gets on base thanks to a tricky little grounder that turns into a single. Weiner later stole second base, setting up Elwood for an opportunity to finally break the deadlock in the game.
Off a 2-2 pitch from Hudson Ella Engel, Elwood would ground past second base, Weiner running home in the nick of time for the game’s first run of the day. The RBI would also be the only run of the day as Newman Catholic gets their fifth straight victory.
The Knights faced Madrid in the second game of the Newman Classic and beat them for their sixth straight victory, 11-1.
