RPD: Elderly man loses $1,000 in computer scam
(ABC 6 News) – The Rochester Police Department said an elderly man lost $1,000 to a computer scam but say it could’ve been much worse.
Police received a call from a 91-year-old Rochester man who said he was on his computer Friday afternoon when a Microsoft pop-up showed up. The pop-up asked for his personal information, which he entered.
The man then got a phone call from someone saying he could fix the man’s computer but would first need $1,000 in Target gift cards. The man went and purchased the gift cards and provided the numbers to the caller.
The caller then reportedly told the man he would need to give them another $40,000. At this point, the man realized it was a scam and started ignoring their phone calls.
The man is out $1,000.
