(KAAL-TV) — The boys hockey teams for Mayo, Albert Lea, and Lourdes all had their seasons on the line Saturday during Section 1A and 1AA semifinal action.

For the 1AA semifinal, the fourth-seed Mayo Spartans went into the Rochester Rec Center against the top-seeded Lakeville South Cougars but fell into a hole quickly. The Spartans ended the first period down 3-0 when the Cougars added more goals. Lakeville South’s Ashton Dahms would up recording a hat trick, scoring two goals in the second period alone.

Ultimately, Mayo’s season ended on home territory, 6-0 in favor of the Cougars. Lakeville South will now play their crosstown rivals, #2 Lakeville North, on March 3rd at the Rec Center.

In 1A competition, third-seed Albert Lea and second-seed Lourdes played a barnburner of a match. Both squads tied the game at 3-3 at the end of the first period. The Lourdes Eagles’ Matthew Mahoney scored first, barely three minutes in before the Tigers countered back in due time.

Tim Chalmers and Joseph Yoon found paydirt in the first period, putting Albert Lea at a 2-1 lead before the eventual tie at first intermission. The Tigers eventually regained and held on to a slim one-goal lead, 4-3 over Lourdes. Albert Lea will now try to follow the girls team’s example and win a sectional title this season.

The Tigers’ Section 1AA Championship match against #4 New Prague is on March 2nd at the Rec Center.
