U of M, Timberwolves, Wild, MNUFC announce temporary COVID vaccination, negative test rules

(KSTP) – Anyone who is at least 5 years old will need to show proof of being vaccinated against COVID-19 or show a negative result from a test taken within 72 hours of attending indoor events at the University of Minnesota.

The university announced the rule Friday, saying it applies to indoor events which will have at least 200 spectators in attendance.

Officials say the rule begins Wednesday, Jan. 26. It is scheduled to end on Wednesday, Feb. 9, however, the school says it may be extended if needed. If the school determines an extension is necessary, officials say they will announce their decision before Feb. 9.

In addition to the vaccine requirement, the school says Minnesota’s indoor mask and face-covering mandate is also in effect for home athletic events which are indoors.

To show proof of vaccination, the school says a person can show their Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-provided vaccine card or a photo of their vaccine card, along with a photo ID with a matching name. They can also use Docket or government-approved services that provide copies of medical records with their photo ID. Officials say guests under the age of 18 don’t need a matching photo ID but those 18 and older must provide an ID. A booster shot also isn’t required.

If you don’t provide proof of vaccination, a negative test result shown by printout, email or a screenshot must be provided. The test must be from a third party, not an at-home test.

The move comes after Minneapolis and St. Paul implemented a temporary policy requiring proof of vaccination or a negative test at places serving food or drinks.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are also implementing a mask and vaccination mandate for fans, in accordance with the city’s policy.

Starting Jan. 16, all fans will be required to wear a face covering inside Target Center, except when eating or drinking.

Starting Jan. 30, fans ages 5 and older will be required to show proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative test that has been administered by a health professional within 72 hours of the game date. A physical CDC vaccination card or digital picture of the card will be allowed. Fans ages 2 to 4 will have to show a negative test administered by a health professional within 72 hours of the game date.

The Minnesota Wild will require fans 5 and older to show proof of a complete COVID-19 vaccination series or a negative COVID-19 test taken under medical supervision within 72 hours of entry, starting on Jan. 26. Booster shots aren’t required but masks will be required at all times inside Xcel Energy Center, except when eating or drinking.

Minnesota United also will require guests ages 5 and older to show proof of a completed COVID-19 vaccination series or a negative COVID-19 test taken under medical supervision within 72 hours of entry for the Feb. 2 U.S. Soccer World Cup Qualifier at Allianz Field. Face coverings are also required for everyone 2 and older in indoor spaces unless eating or drinking.
