Whitney Mixdorf to run for Iowa State Senate
(ABC 6 News) – Thursday, Whitney Mixdorf of Clear Lake announced her campaign bid for State Senate in District 30.
The new SD30 includes Cerro Gordo, Worth, Mitchell, and part of Floyd counties. Whitney Mixdorf is running as a Democrat against current Senator Waylon Brown.
Mixdorf is a small business owner in Clear Lake, running South Shore Donut Company since 2017. She is also Vice Chair of the Cerro Gordo County Democratic Central Committee, and Co-Chair of the Communications Committee for the New Iowa Project.
In a statement, Mixdorf said "I feel called to run for State Senate because Iowans need a champion for families and small businesses."
My love of politics was fueled by growing up watching my late grandpa, Bob Amosson, make his mark as a longtime County Supervisor for Cerro Gordo County. Through his leadership, I learned the value of bipartisanship and a real understanding of the importance of working together for the public good. As State Senator, I plan to focus on advocating for Iowa’s small businesses, helping family farmers, defending the public education system and our teachers, and advocating for the needs of lower- and middle-class Iowans.
During the pandemic, I helped other local small business owners find and apply for grants and funding opportunities and assisted several in updating and adapting their business models to survive the shutdowns. My husband John and I also created a program to help provide vulnerable Clear Lake residents with food and other basic necessities during the initial lock downs. I have faced tough challenges in my life, and I have never shied away from finding solutions.
The general election takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 8, and the new districts kick in on Jan. 3, 2023.
