UPDATE: Suspect in Rochester stabbing formally charged with 1st, 2nd-degree assault
(ABC 6 News) – A Rochester man was arraigned on 1st- and 2nd-degree assault charges after a stabbing at Valleyhigh Flats March 10.
Eric Dewayne Fields Jr., 25, is held at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center on $100,000 bail with conditions, or $200,000 bail with no conditions.
According to court documents filed Wednesday, March 12, Fields was officially charged with 1st-degree assault–great bodily harm; as well as 2nd-degree assault–dangerous weapon.

Court documents allege that officers responding to the stabbing call at 9:43 a.m. Monday found an adult man with a stab wound to his chest, just to the left of his sternum.
The man was “somewhat conscious” and allegedly told police Fields had just stabbed him.
Officers applied immediate aid, and the man was taken to St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Later, a detective spoke with the victim, who said Fields had stabbed him in his room, they “wrestled” and the knife fell to the floor, then he tried to get to the front door.
Surveillance video of the hallway allegedly showed the man leaving his apartment and collapsing in the hallway, after which Fields exited the apartment and left the building.
According to court documents, police determined that Fields went to the Hy-Vee at West Circle Drive, called someone, and was picked up by a Silver Toyota Camry.
Officers found the Camry at the Olmsted County Government Center later Monday morning and arrested Fields, according to court documents.
Fields allegedly told police he had slept near the old KMart building in southeast Rochester the previous night, had not been on the NW side of Rochester at all that day, and hadn’t seen the victim in three days.
“After being confronted by Det. Kusick with these untruths, Fields claimed the incident was self-defense, while being evasive and confused about the details,” court documents read.

A quick glance at the Olmsted County Adult Detention Center’s custody listing Tuesday made it seem that Fields faced a recommended 1st-degree murder charge.
However, the Minnesota legal system lists criminal charges first by offense, then specifies if the alleged crime was attempted, per MN statute 609.17.
Fields was only charged with assault Wednesday, March 12.
