ALERT DAY: Snow, wind continue into Saturday
Snow will continue to be driven by a large storm system and a strong wind through Friday night into Saturday. The snow will start to taper off through the day Saturday, but occasional snow showers are likely through the afternoon. Winds will continue to blow and drift snow through Saturday before tapering off the second half of the weekend. Travel will be very difficult in places from Friday evening into Saturday morning, especially in wide open, rural areas where wind-driven snow makes for low visibility and icy road conditions.
While snowfall totals haven’t quite been what was earlier expected, this storm system is still having a significant impact on travel, especially where blizzard conditions persist in Iowa.
The next winter punch will be in the form of cold, arctic air. Temperatures will be dropping Saturday, from around 16 degrees tonight at midnight, to the single digits Saturday afternoon. Temps will remain below zero from Saturday night through the majority of Tuesday. And on Tuesday, that’s not really a warm-up, highs will simply make it to around 1° in the afternoon. Next week will remain very cold with the “warmest” day being Wednesday with a high of 13°.
