(ABC 6 News) – A medical board is providing Iowa abortion providers further guidance on a new restrictive abortion law, which would ban abortions after about six weeks if upheld by the state’s Supreme Court.
The new rules instruct physicians to make “a bona fide effort to detect a fetal heartbeat.”
The law also defines the term “unborn child” as “all stages of development, including embryo and fetus.”
The board did not give guidance on just how imminent the risks to the mother have to be before doctors can intervene.
Three other states have similar abortion bans making their way through the courts.
