Albert Lea celebrates Juneteenth
(ABC 6 News) – The city of Albert Lea celebrated Juneteenth on Wednesday, a holiday that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States.
The city officially recognized the holiday in 2023, and held their second annual Juneteenth Celebration on Wednesday, June 19.
“We need to be celebrating with our black and brown friends, and telling them that , you’re welcome, this is a great celebration, our community welcomes you, so this is a really great way to do that,” Holly Babcock, executive director of the Albert Lea Conventions and Visitors Bureau, said.
The celebration included a silent auction with art from local artists and performances from local comedians, poets and speakers.
“Albert Lea wants to move forward. And we do that in part by recognizing, acknowledging, accepting and understanding everyone in our community,” Rachel Christensen, Albert Lea City Council member, said.
Speakers and performers also had the opportunity to share their own experiences and talk about what the holiday means to them.
Representatives from the Albert Lea Conventions and Visitors Bureau said they hope to continue growing the Juneteenth Celebration and plan other events like it.
