(ABC 6 News) – Albert Lea will receive $2.2 million in state grant money to help with water contamination clean-up from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
The city will receive more than $130,000 towards the Blazing Star Landing, a site spanning more than 3 and a half acres.
For nearly a hundred years, a meat-packing facility called the land home before it burnt to the ground in 2001.
Petroleum and other contaminants infected the 3.66 acres.
For years, costs associated with rehabilitating the area forced the site to remain empty.
Now, plans have come in to build a convenience store and carwash on the land, estimated to contribute 19 jobs in Albert Lea.
