Austin celebrates Freedom Fest for Fourth of July
(ABC 6 News) – There were plenty of festivities going on for Austin’s annual Freedom Fest on the Fourth of July.
Despite the rain, the mood at Bandshell Park throughout the day couldn’t have been better.
From the morning parade to the afternoon tunes, it was a blast for friends and families alike.
Yet the heavy rain over the last few weeks was still on people’s minds.
Some were simply happy for the break.
“It’s great to get out of the house,” said resident Priscilla Jackson. “My kids have been cooped up because of all the rain and trying to go to like the park and stuff but it’s hard. But it’s so good to get out and finally see the sun, enjoy the festivities.”
Some were ready to go even if it was raining.
“On our app that our band teacher communicates with us, he told us we’re doing it no matter what,” said Clark Ekins, an Austin High School freshman who took part in the parade’s marching band.
And others decided to take precautions, like the Hwy 218 Cornhole tournament.
For the last several years, the tournament has taken place in the park with the rest of the festival.
This year, it was moved inside.
“I made the call yesterday, just cause I knew there’s people coming from out of town and that and I just wanted to keep it going,” said organizer Scott Nelson. “I didn’t want a chance of rain. We have thousands of dollars of equipment that could get ruined in the rain.”
Still, officials planned on pushing through as much as they could, regardless of the weather.
“Basically it’s on until it’s off, so we’re gonna roll with it as much as we can,” said Taylor Bliese, a member of the board of directors for the Austin Enhancement Group who organized the festival. “If we need to stop or pause, we will, and we’ll kind of just take a break. And then if things clear up again, we’re still hoping to go ahead with the fireworks.”
