(ABC 6 News) – This year’s Paint the Town Pink campaign, aimed at raising money for breast cancer research, brought the community together Sunday morning for “Pickle for Pink”.
It is the first annual pickleball marathon for the campaign, played at the Austin Community Center.
Dozens of people showed up to play a fast-growing sport for a good cause.
“This is the first pickleball that’s ever been brought into it and there was another new event this week,” said the marathon’s organizer DeAnne Silbaugh. “It’s more for the town to raise money for the institute and breast cancer research, which just needs all the money we can get right now.”
It’s a game many people in the Austin community love to play, but they say it’s even more fun when they know they are playing for a good cause.
“I’m a big pickleball fan and I play several times a week. I wanted to support the cause, a cure for cancer, and it’s just been a lot of fun playing with different people, meeting different people,” explained one of the participants of the event, Eileen Wiebelhaus.
People at the tournament say the Paint the Town Pink campaign really brings everyone in the community together and they love coming up with new events to get people involved.
They say they hope a pickleball marathon is an event that is here to stay.
