(ABC 6 News) – Unprecedented, a word used to describe today and a police standoff on Feb. 18, 2024.

On Feb. 28, thousands of people gathered to memorialize the three first responders killed in the line of duty amidst the incident. Not only to honor Officer Paul Elmstrand, Officer Matthew Ruge, and Firefighter/Paramedic Adam Finseth, but to thank them.

First responders from near and far led a procession in honor of the fallen and their ultimate sacrifice.

“The truest heroes don’t choose to die” said Burnsville Fire Chief BJ Jungmann during a speech. “They choose to live a life where facing death is a possibility, driven by the love that compels them to protect others.”

Those words capturing exactly what Elmstrand, Ruge and firefighter/paramedic Finseth were doing on that fateful Sunday morning.

During the ceremony at Grace Church in Eden Prairie, fellow Officer Pete Mueller remembered Ruge as smart, humble and selfless. Mueller said Ruge took so much pride in being a part of the crisis management team.

“And he was a perfect fit for this role. And it was because of his calm demeanor and his authenticity and my admiration and affection for Matt grew as we worked, together and learned together,” said Mueller.

Burnsville Deputy Chief Matt Smith spoke about Officer Elmstrand’s infectious laugh and ironically enough his love for honoring fallen officers.

“He was so excited and proud to apply to be a part of the Lima Honor Guard. Paul was notified just a few weeks ago that he had made the Lima Honor Guard team, where he would have honored the fallen as we are doing today.”

And for Adam Finseth, his fire captain remembered him as compassionate, courageous, trustworthy and how he was and still is a great example of what serving the community means.

“Adam, I know you’re up there in heaven, probably looking down and thinking this is all too much. Well, brother, you deserve it. You are the best of us. We love you. We miss you. We promise to take care of the family and each other. Your legacy and impact will live on forever,” said Captain Brandon Johannsen

These men answered the call of duty and now that they are no longer with us…

“Know that you will forever be missed, but we will always be united. Know that you can rest easy and we’ve got it from here,” Said Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz.

What was made clear today is that these three brave men were loved so much by their friends, family and community and though they may have fallen, they will never be forgotten.
