UPDATE: Hwy 56 reopened after fume leak closure, deputy treated for exposure

(ABC 6 News) — Highway 56 is reopened after a bulk storage tank leaked anhydrous ammonia just north of the Mower County line on Wednesday night, according to a release from the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office.

The fume was first reported to dispatch at 7:18 p.m. Wednesday night. Emergency crews worked overnight to clean the area, and the road reopened at 4:53 a.m. Thursday, the release said.

A responding Dodge County Deputy was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital at midnight after reporting he did not feel well, the release said. The deputy was treated for anhydrous exposure and was released around 4 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Brownsdale Fire Department, Blooming Prairie Fire Department, MNDOT and Olmsted County’s Hazmat Team responded to assist with cleanup, according to the release.

At the time of publication, the cause of the leak is still unknown, according to the release.

ABC 6 News was able to confirm that the hazardous material release was an anhydrous ammonia spill.

The road is expected to be closed until 5 AM on Thursday.

(ABC 6 News) — According to MnDOT, Highway 56 is closed in both directions near Hayfield between County Highway 1 and MN 30.

MnDOT is warning of a “major hazardous materials release” in the area, and drivers are asked to follow a detour around the closure.
