(ABC 6 News) – Local artist and NIACC Visual Arts Instructor Alexis Beucler is working on an interactive mural in Downtown Mason City.
The idea originated when a citizen reached out to the City Administrator and said she loves to visit interactive murals in other towns featuring butterfly wings, and angel wings, to take pictures in front of them.
The interactive mural is set to be in place before RAGBRAI so it can be used as a backdrop for the thousands of “selfies” and group photos that will be taken on July 27.
The mural features some familiar marching band characters that have been used to promote the community’s musical heritage since the 1960s.
Beucler has updated the figures to represent North Iowa’s growing diversity. Spaced between the painted characters are several trumpets, which participants can pretend to play. Symbols painted on the pavement will indicate the perfect spots for photographers to get the best shot.
