(ABC 6 News) – Law enforcement officials are investigating a homicide in Hancock County.
Britt police confirmed Monday that Monte Eckels has been arrested and charged with 1st-degree murder in the death of Leallen Bergman.
According to the City of Britt Police Department Facebook page, officers and emergency personnel were called to the scene of a homicide on Saturday night, March 4, in the 200 block of 4th St. SE.
Chief Mark Anderson with the Britt Police Department said officers initially responded to a disturbance call and encountered Eckels, 56, of Britt, who was “hostile with responding officers and detained.”
According to Anderson, when officers entered the residence, they found Bergman, 62, of Ventura, who was pronounced dead from stab wounds at the scene.
Eckels’ criminal complaint claims the suspect “willfully, deliberately, and with premeditation” stabbed Bergman with a serrated silver knife, listed as having been in on display or in Eckels’ possession.
The Britt Police Department said this appears to be an isolated incident with no threat to the community.
A GoFundMe has been set up on behalf of the victim Leallen Bergman.
