UPDATE: Man sentenced to 50 years for Mason City murder
(ABC 6 News) – A Mason City man was sentenced to 50 years in prison for the murder of another man.
Frederick Joseph Olson was arrested Dec. 18, 2023 after Mason City police found 63-year-old Leroy White dead during a welfare check on South Grover Avenue the same day.
According to court proceedings Monday, Nov. 18, Olson must serve 70 percent of the sentence before he becomes eligible for parole.
Olson was originally charged with 1st-degree premeditated murder. He pleaded guilty to an amended charge of 2nd-degree murder Nov. 1.

Olson was booked into Monday, Dec. 18 on the charge, after Mason City police found 63-year-old Leroy White dead during a welfare check on South Grover Ave. the same day.

(ABC 6 News) – The Mason City Police Department has arrested a man on suspicion of murder after a welfare check lead to the discovery of a dead body.
As part of their investigation, police arrested Frederick Olson, 51, of Mason City and he has been charged with murder in the first degree.
The arrest stemmed from a welfare check at 1916 South Grover Ave. around 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18. Police eventually got a warrant to search the property, which is when officers found 63-year-old Leroy White dead.
Both the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office and the North Iowa Narcotics Task Force Special Operations Group helped in the investigation.

(ABC 6 News) – A man was booked into the Cerro Gordo County jail around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 18.
According to the jail roster, Frederick Olson, 51, was booked on a charge of 1st-degree murder – premeditation.
There was a heavy police presence in the southwest part of town on Monday night, but it is unclear if that was related to Olson’s arrest.
