Mason City woman sentenced to up to 20 years in sexual abuse case

(ABC 6 News) – A Mason City woman has been sentenced to up to 20 years in prison for child sex abuse in Cerro Gordo County District Court Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Destiny Marie Murphy, 23, pleaded guilty last week to two counts of Lascivious Acts with a Child which is a Class C felony. Both counts each carry a 10-year prison sentence.

Prosecutors originally charged Murphy with 2nd-degree sexual abuse, a Class B felony.

The original complaint filed by Mason City police on Sept. 18 stated that Murphy was accused of repeatedly committing sex acts with a child under 14 between April 2021 and April 2024.

On top of the 20-year sentence, Murphy was ordered to pay a fine of $1,370 and 15% crime services surcharge, however that was suspended because the court did not think her capable of contributing to those payments.

Murphy was ordered to pay a $90 Domestic or Sexual Abuse Surcharge.

Murphy must also register with the Iowa Sex Offender Registry after she is released from prison, and complete sex offender treatment.
