New area code coming to southern Minnesota
(ABC 6 News) – It was forever known as the 507, but soon another area code will be joining southern Minnesota, 924.
“In any area, when the phone numbers run out we need a new area code,” Minnesota Public Utilities Commission rates analyst Sally Anne McShane said.
If you already have that 507 area code, you won’t have to change your phone number, but you will soon be required to dial all ten digits of your desired contact.
The new area code is aimed at serving those flocking to the area as the population rises.
“You’ll start seeing them in early 2025, that’s when we’re projected to run out of 507 numbers,” McShane said.
507 has meant a lot to people in the area. Many businesses even integrating it into their brand, like 507 (Pub)lic house.
“507, obviously being the area code, public house is kind of an old U.K. term and it’s also very popular on the East coast,” owner Tim Ross said.
They’ve been in business since last July in Rochester, offering International and American comfort food.
Ross isn’t too concerned about the change.
“For me I’m used to it, I’ve lived in nine states,” Ross said.
As 924 starts to make its way through southern Minnesota and everyone gets used to dialing all 10 digits, many say the 507 will still live on.
“To me everyone’s still will always, for the most part everyone will think of 507 being southern Minnesota,” Ross said.
Between now and July 30th, all calls will go through even if you forget to dial the area code, but after July 30th, you’ll have to dial in the area code first or your call won’t go through.
