UPDATE: RPU says raccoon that caused early morning Rochester power outage survived

(ABC 6 News) — Rochester Public Utilities says the raccoon that caused a power outage affecting thousands of customers early Wednesday morning survived the incident.

According to RPU, this is not usually the case when animals come into contact with their infrastructure.

RPU says they are relieved by the outcome and wish the raccoon a full recovery.

(ABC 6 News) — UPDATE: Power is restored to Rochester Public Utilities customers after an outage affected thousands across the city early Wednesday morning, RPU said.

A raccoon on a transformer caused the outage, according to RPU.

Over 4,000 customers are affected by a power outage in Rochester on Wednesday morning, according to Rochester Public Utilities’ outage map.

RPU is aware of the outage and is investigating the cause, said communications coordinator Raquel Hellman. The cause of the outage is unknown at this time.

Several parts of the city are affected, according to the map.
