(ABC 6 News) – U.S. Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa is part of a bipartisan effort to create clear guidelines for the FDA when it comes to egg packaging.
The legislation aims to ensure any product labeled as an egg actually came from poultry.
This comes after some companies began creating and marketing plant-based egg substitute products under the label of “eggs.”
“I’m committed to maintaining the integrity of real eggs in our grocery stores on behalf of both consumers and farmers,” said Ernst.
According to the senator’s office, Iowa leads the nation in egg-production.
