Stewartville volleyball coach retires after 37 years of coaching
(ABC 6 News) – It’s been quite the run for John Dzubay in Stewartville: 37 years, five state titles, 17 players finishing with either 1,000 kills, set assists, or digs; and a Minnesota Volleyball Player of the Year.
Dzubay is proud of all of the players he has coached, “You just can’t be good unless you have good kids that are willing to do the stuff you’re asking and work hard, and gosh I have been fortunate to have that at Stewartville.”
Now, it’s time for Dzubay to call an end to his career. He made the decision around New Year’s. “New Year’s came around and I thought to myself I can’t do this forever.”
Others have seen Dzubay’s accomplishments firsthand, like Activities Director Curt Hughes. In fact, Dzubay coached Hughes’s wife.
Hughes has been an employee in Stewartville schools for 25 years. “John’s a legend in the volleyball world. He’s done a great deal for our school. He’s done a great deal for our volleyball program.”
As for future plans, Dzubay plans to spend more time doing some of his favorite hobbies, disc golf being one of them. He is also excited to spend more time at his lake cabin. “I have finally had a chance to stop and look back and it’s mind blowing even for me what has happened here.”
Hughes thanks Dzubay for all he has done. “John was a big part of our school history, and he deserves nothing but the best.”
While his time in the gym may be over, Stewartville will always be home for Dzubay.
No head coach has been hired at this time to replace him, but Hughes and company agree it will be big shoes to fill.
We will provide news of someone being hired when it happens.
