Teenager pleads guilty to Mason City liquor store shooting

(ABC 6 News) – A teenager accused of attempted murder pleaded guilty to lesser charges Thursday.

Jerell Theodore McKnight, 19, was taken into custody after a June shooting at MidTown Liquor and Vape.

McKnight pleaded guilty Aug. 22 to two charges of felony willful injury.

His plea agreement states that the state agreed to recommend between 1 and 5 years in prison at sentencing.

(ABC 6 News) – UPDATE: Mason City police took a teenager into custody after a shooting at MidTown Liquor and Vape Friday evening.

Police took 19-year-old Jerell Theodore McKnight into custody close to the scene.

He was charged with felony attempted murder and serious misdemeanor Person Ineligible to Carry Dangerous Weapons.

According to police chief Jeff Brinkley, the victim in the incident suffered multiple, non-life-threatening gunshot wounds and is in stable condition at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center.

According to Brinkley, the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation crime scene team assisted with the investigation Saturday morning.

Investigators originally believed there were multiple shooters involved in the incident. Brinkley said Monday, June 17, that MCPD is not able to comment on the possibility of multiple suspects.

He said there was no danger to the public.

Reported shooting in Mason City

(ABC 6 News) – Mason City Police are investigating a shooting at MidTown Liquor and Vape on North Federal Ave. just before 5:00 Friday evening.

Initial reports indicated several shooters were involved.

When police arrived, they found a man who was hurt and provided medical care on scene before being brought to the hospital. There is no update on the victim’s condition. There are no other reports of injuries at this time.

Police say employees were present at the time of the shooting, but none were injured.

One suspect was taken into custody.

At this time, it is an active crime scene, and police are asking the public to avoid the area.
