Temperatures dwindle as many of the area is under a wind chill advisory
(ABC 6 News) – As the night goes on it’s only getting colder, so dressing warm and staying safe is very important.
Some Minnesotans like the cold.
“Loving it, I don’t want mosquitoes bigger than me, and I’m just wearing this and a sweater underneath, I sit in hockey rinks all year so I’m good,” Yvonne Berryman said.
Many missed the foot high snowbanks and white landscape that has been absent for the last few months.
While the snow was just what some had wished for, the negative wind chill is a different story.
“You just can’t really go to many places because you don’t to get out there and be cold and not be able to do a lot,” Jack Ulland said.
Olmsted County is currently under a wind chill advisory with temperatures that feel like 25 to 35 below.
That means frost bite could happen as quick as 15 to 20 minutes outside.
For some, the frigid weather is also wreaking havoc inside, with one woman’s pipes freezing inside her home.
“It gets worse as I get older, early this morning we didn’t have any water we live in the country,” Martha Ely-Steines said.
It’s something Ely-Steines is no stranger to because when those temperatures plummet, she makes sure to be prepared.
“We make sure we have enough fuel, and then a couple days’ worth of food in case we can’t get anywhere.”
The weather is great for activities like ice fishing and skiing, but always be sure to be dressed for the occasion.
“We’re just trying to stay inside, enjoy the sunshine, just try to keep the weather as warm as you can,” Ulland said.
The National Weather Service is keeping Olmsted County under that wind chill advisory through Tuesday.
If you do have to go out, layer up, pack some handwarmers, and get inside if you start to get cold.
