(ABC 6 News) — The Rochester Honkers finished the season with a 32-36 record, a two-win improvement from last season, and a 25-win improvement from 2020.
They defeated Eau Claire Express 8-6 in their home finale on August 12. Every year there are new faces for the Honkers. This summer they had a new manager in Andrew Urbistondo.
"We had a great group of guys," Urbistondo said. "Everybody got better in some aspect and even though the record wasn’t there man that’s what summer ball is about. Getting your reps. Getting your at-bats and ultimately becoming a better man on and off the field."
Another newcomer was Indiana State pitcher Cam Holycross who struck out 38 this season in just over 31.1 innings.
"Just getting to know these guys…getting some playing time," Holycross said. "I mean summer league is the time to get better. We all come from different parts of the country, [and] collaborate as a team. It’s weird the first week. You don’t really know anybody but then it kinda becomes a camaraderie over a long time."
The Honkers finished the year with a 23-13 record at home and next summer will mark the 30th summer of fun at Mayo Field as they look to win a league-leading sixth Northwoods League Championship.
