Austin man arrested after shots fired from house with children inside

(ABC 6 News) – An Austin man was arrested Saturday after discharging a firearm during a domestic altercation in SE Rochester.

At about 2:58 a.m. Nov. 5, Rochester police responded to a home in the 900 block of 1st Street SE, where a 36-year-old Rochester woman told them 28-year-old Demonterious Jackson had fired a gun in the air to intimidate her.

The woman, who told police she was Jackson’s girlfriend, met police at East Center Street and said her 5, 9, and 13-year-old children were asleep in the house while she and Jackson fought.

She told police that Jackson had shoved her, and she had left the house to call the police from her neighbor’s residence. As she left, she told police she heard Jackson fire a gun into the air from the porch.

She told police Jackson had “mental health issues,” Capt. Casey Moilanen said.

Rochester police set up a perimeter around the home and told Jackson to come out. When he did, police arrested him. Jackson is currently at the Adult Detention Center, awaiting arraignment.

Rochester police claim they found a 380 mm and a 9 mm shell casing on the porch, and searched the house, locating the 380 handgun but not a 9 mm handgun.

Rochester police also claim they found about 44 grams of suspected cocaine in the home, and recommend charges of 2nd-degree drug possession, reckless discharge of a firearm, domestic assault, and felon in possession of a firearm.

There were no injuries reported during the altercation, and Rochester police say they believe the three children slept through the incident.
