Blue Earth Sheriff’s Office warns of phone scam
(ABC 6 News) – A new scam warning has been issued from a Minnesota law enforcement agency. According to the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office Captain Paul Barta, their office has received multiple calls from citizens saying they have been contacted by sheriff’s officials demanding money because of a missed court date or missed jury duty. The caller then requests an electronic transfer of funds to resolve the matter.
“These calls are fraudulent. Law enforcement will not solicit an electronic transfer of money by phone.
Modern technology makes it possible for people to alter their caller ID so do not rely on that as
verification of the caller’s identity,” continues Captain Barta.
Anyone that has experienced a financial loss as a result of this scam is encouraged to call 911 for
assistance. Additional information on common scams can be found at Scams and Safety — FBI and Scams | Consumer Advice.
