Civic Theatre opens new show: Hedwig and the Angry Inch
(ABC 6 News) – Set in Germany under the shadow of the Berlin Wall, the Tony award-winning musical ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ will premiere tonight at the Rochester Civic Theatre.
The story of ‘Hedwig and the Angry Inch’ celebrates individual differences and the journey towards accepting one’s identity.
“We start thinking about how many of us are potentially not feeling like we can be who we truly are and that story of the impact, of what that truly is and how many people feel that,” said Catherine Davis, the music director for the Rochester Civic Theatre.
This punk-rock production, although fun at times, will surely pull some tears.
“There are some sad parts, absolutely,” said Davis. “But you’ll be on your feet clapping along with the fun songs. You’ll be laughing and then, absolutely, there’s times where your heart is really touched by what’s going on.”
How does it all work? What goes on behind the scenes?
“When you walk in, it’s an immersive experience and you are in the back parking lot of the Mayo Civic Center,” said Davis. “Which is where Hedwig has set up for her concert with her band, the Angry Inch.”
They say it takes a village to raise a child.
“Oh, understatement,” said office manager Logan Stewart.
He goes on to say, “It definitely takes a village, it takes our volunteers, it takes our staff, it takes anyone who’s willing to lend a hand.”
Opening night is Thursday at 7 p.m., and the production will run until February 25, 2024. Tickets start at $30 for adults and $22 for students.
