District 6 Sheriffs oppose new gun control bills

(ABC 6 News) – Tuesday, every sheriff in our area all signed a letter saying they oppose a pair of bills making their way through the legislature.
If the bills pass, gun owners would face a list of new requirements including storing their guns and ammunition in separate locations and keeping gun locks in place during sales or transfers.
Anyone found not doing those things would become ineligible to own a gun.
In that letter, the sheriffs say “this unnecessary bill, if passed, would make responsible gun owners criminals for not locking up their firearms.”
That letter coming just as President Joe Biden signed an executive order tackling new gun control measures.
The order aims to increase the number of background checks to buy guns, promote more secure firearms storage and ensure u.S. Law enforcement agencies are getting the most out of a bipartisan gun control law enacted last summer.
Tuesday’s action does not change U.S. Government law, instead it directs federal agencies to ensure compliance with existing laws and procedures.
