(ABC 6 News) – A Wykoff home is a total loss after a fire Monday afternoon.
The fire broke out around 2 p.m. at a home in the 200 block of S Gold Street Monday afternoon forcing the closure of Highway 80 – which goes right through town of around 400 people.
“It’s devastating,” neighbor Michael Studinger said.
Flames could be seen coming from the roof as the fire appears to be burning through the home’s attic.
“Because in a small community like Wykoff, we don’t get too many fires here at all. It’s pretty rare this is the first time. I been here six years and this is the first one I’ve seen” Studinger said.
Neighbors like Michael Studinger watched as firefighters from several are departments including Wykoff, Chatfield and Spring Valley worked for nearly three hours to get the fire out.
Fire officials says the blaze appears to have started in the kitchen and spread up into the attic. At one point, the fire reignited.
Crews brought in special equipment to tear down part of the house, so they could get to the flames.
studinger says the bright orange flames were shocking, but he knows his neighbor is going to be okay.
“She’s got a lot of support here in town. She will be staying with friends until the house is taken care of,” Studinger said.
No one was injured in the fire, but the house is deemed a total loss.
