How old are you actually? What it means to have a leap year birthday
(ABC 6 News) – Birthdays are something we usually look forward to once a year; but what if your birthday only came around once every 4 years?
A question on many people’s minds, how do you celebrate a day we only get to see every four years?
When your birthday falls on leap day, it can be difficult deciding how to celebrate it. But two families chose to start their day with ABC 6.

Leena Crouch turns 12 on leap day and when asked if she’d rather celebrate her birthday on Feb. 28 or March 1, she had the best answer.
“Both,” said Crouch.
She goes on to say, “when it’s not the 29 we celebrate on the 28, and we wait until the weekend for my party. This year I get to have one of my friends sleepover before the party.”
Although birthdays are fun for the kids, we can’t forget about the parents.
On leap day in 2016, only 2 babies were born in Olmsted County. ABC 6 interviewed one of the mothers that year.
“I think being the youngest of four he’s just trying to stand out a little bit, have something extra special. 2020 will be his first birthday,” said Tonya Keim, mother to eight-year-old Calvin.
Fast forward to 2024, and she joined ABC 6 once again, so Calvin could start his birthday morning off on the ABC 6 Good Morning Show.
“He’s unique, he’s special; he’s funny,” said Tonya.
Tonya said it’s been such a joy raising Calvin over the years, and he definitely fits the bill when it comes to unique birthdays.
“I was four years old when I had my first actual birthday, and now I’m eight and it’s my second, but this is probably one I’m going to remember for a very long time,” said Calvin.
We’d like to wish all our Leap Day babies a happy birthday.
